… and strong again! Team Vorarlberg captain Colin Stüssi finishes third on the second stage of the 41st Tour of Romania UCI 2.2 – now also third overall!Colin Stüssi narrowly misses out on victory in stage two of the 41st Turul Romaniei UCI 2.2 – third on the stage and now third in the general classification.
From the very start, Colin Stüssi and Team Vorarlberg had clearly marked Thursday’s stage as a key goal on their to-do list for the race. The second stage from Pitesti ended after 172 kilometers with a 20-kilometer climb up to 1600 meters on the Pasul Dichiu.
Team Vorarlberg Express keeps rolling
A breakaway group went up the road, but Team Vorarlberg took control of the peloton, setting the pace all the way to the final climb with Dominik Amann, Emanuel Zangerle, Kilian Feurstein, Pirmin Benz, and Alexander Konychev. The breakaway riders were reeled in on the ascent.
Colin Stüssi attacks – third on Pasul Dichiu and third overall
Six kilometers before the finish came the decisive attack from captain Colin Stüssi – and it worked. The 32-year-old Swiss rider split the reduced bunch apart and went solo towards the finish. Then, Philipp Hofbauer (AUT / WSA KTM Graz) and Cesare Chesini (ITA / MBH Bank Ballan) managed to catch him in a wind-exposed section. However, they mostly refused to share the workload. Stüssi did the lion’s share of the work until 150 meters before the line to keep the chasers at bay. In the sprint, he was narrowly beaten by stage winner Chesini and Hofbauer.
Stüssi is now third overall as well – another UCI podium in the final stage race of the season!
Stage three on Friday will run from Brasov to Buzau over 180 kilometers with constant ups and downs, before Saturday’s 212-kilometer challenge.
