Another Podium Finish for Team Vorarlberg
Not a day goes by without news of success from the Caribbean. In today’s sixth stage of the Tour de Guadeloupe (136 kilometers from Orange Moudoung to Goyave), Colin Stüssi finished third, impressively reaffirming his ambitions for the overall classification.
And yet, on what was likely the most difficult stage of this year’s tour, things had looked even better for the Team Vorarlberg captain for quite some time. The Swiss rider reached the day’s highest climb alone, with a half-minute lead. On the long flat stretch to Goyave, however, he was overtaken by Clément Sanchez and Vincent Bodet (both from Team Vendée U Primeo Energie). The two French riders finished 43 seconds ahead of Stüssi, who crossed the finish line alone.
“Our goal was for Colin to make up time on the leader today. That plan worked out. He moved up from 13th to fifth place. He also showed that on the climbs here, no one can touch him. That makes us very optimistic about the coming days, especially since his deficit—just under four minutes—isn’t too big,” said race director Paul Renger, delighted with his team’s latest successful performance. He highlighted the team spirit among his riders and had special praise for the young Vorarlberg native Dominik Amann, who had to do the most work for the team up until the first climb.
Tobias Nolde finished 22nd today, losing nearly eight minutes, and slipped from first to tenth place in the overall standings. Emanuel Zangerle defended the green jersey as the points leader with a 12th-place finish today and is eighth overall—6:10 minutes behind Cole Owen, who reclaimed the yellow jersey after just one day.
Two riders from the Bahamas and France, respectively, caused a stir. As was reported today, the two rode behind a support vehicle for an extended period during the fourth stage. They were disqualified for their unsportsmanlike conduct.
A total of 1,225 kilometers are on the schedule through Sunday. Twenty-eight teams are competing.
