Impressive performance by Ignazio Cireddu in his home race – Giacomo Ballabio still in the lead overall

The story of the third day of the Tour of Sardinia was written by Ignazio Cireddu (picture). In his home race, the newcomer to Team Vorarlberg showed himself from his very best side. For 130 kilometers he was first solo and later with his breakaway partner Ivan Taccone at the front of the top-class field. Their lead was almost four minutes at times before the two were caught 20 kilometers before the finish in Tortoli.

“It will be very difficult against the big teams, but I know every kilometer here and will try to surprise them,” Cireddu announced before the start of the tour. And it was precisely on the most important section for him personally – the route passed his front door today – that he was able to impressively realize his plan.

His six teammates conserved their energy for tomorrow’s queen stage. Giacomo Ballabio finished the bunch sprint at the same time as stage winner Dusan Rajovic. He is the best of the seven Team Vorarlberg riders in the overall standings in fifth place, 1:03 minutes behind the leader Nicolo Garibbo.
