Stage victory for Team Vorarlberg by Tobias Nolde
Team Vorarlberg is among the top contenders for victory at the 75th Tour de Guadeloupe. After Colin Stüssi narrowly missed out on a stage win yesterday by finishing second, today’s standout rider was Tobias Nolde. In the sprint finish of a 13-rider group, the 27-year-old German was unbeatable. Along the way, he also collected bonus seconds and moved up to second place in the overall standings—just one second behind Britain’s Owen Cole.
Overall, the stage (155 kilometers from Deshaies to Lamentin) went exactly as the Vorarlberg riders had hoped. Despite temperatures of 37 degrees and high humidity, the pace was extremely fast from the start, and after 50 kilometers a group broke away, capitalizing on disunity in the peloton and never being caught again until the finish. Without having to dig deep, the breakaway riders built up a lead of over five minutes all the way to the finish.
“We’re now in an ideal position as we gradually head into the mountains,” said Race Director Paul Renger, delighted with his protégé’s success. “I’m also very encouraged by the fact that the entire team is doing an outstanding job and we’re working together really well.”
Kilian Feurstein won the sprint from the main pack. The peloton also included Emanuel Zangerle (13th overall), Colin Stüssi (16th), and Dominik Röber (33rd), all of whom, like Nolde, still have a good chance in the overall standings.
A total of 1,225 kilometers are on the schedule in the Caribbean through next Sunday. Twenty-eight teams are competing. The race is expected to be decided in the mountains.
