Team Vorarlberg: A Fantastic Finale in the Caribbean
What a finish for Team Vorarlberg at the Tour de Guadeloupe: a stage victory and the green jersey for Kilian Feurstein, with Colin Stüssi finishing third overall on the podium of the race’s top riders. Tobias Nolde also secured another top-10 finish in the general classification. The joy was understandably immense.
“If everything goes as usual, tomorrow will be a day for the sprinters,” Paul Renger had said after Saturday’s ninth stage. The sports director of Team Vorarlberg was right in his prediction. But before that happened, there was plenty of action to come. Even an outside temperature of 34 degrees and high humidity didn’t stop the riders from setting a blistering pace right from the start—much to the delight of the numerous spectators, who created a huge buzz along the streets.
The average speed was 53 km/h after 30 kilometers, and the pace remained similar until the end. “The circuit was really cool, but also challenging with lots of small climbs,” Renger reported. “There were attacks over and over again, and small groups were constantly forming—it felt like every one of us was part of one at some point today.”
In the final lap, the last two breakaway riders were caught just in time, leading to a bunch sprint in which Kilian Feurstein was in a class of his own with an unstoppable surge. The young rider from Dornbirn was so dominant that he was able to ease off and coast to the finish line a few meters before the finish line. To top it all off, Feurstein also reclaimed the green jersey for the points leader, which he had already worn once earlier in the week.
Colin Stüssi tied with Feurstein for 16th place and confidently defended his podium position in the overall standings—third place for the captain is a well-deserved reward for a truly strong performance by the entire team (see downloadable image) over the course of a week and a half in the Caribbean.
Tobias Nolde also crossed the finish line in Baie-Mahault with the leading group, thereby maintaining his position in the overall standings and securing the second top-10 finish for Vorarlberg. American Owen Cole crossed the finish line in the yellow jersey, winning the 75th Tour de Guadeloupe with a 1:46-minute lead over Clement Sanchez (France) and a 2:59-minute lead over Colin Stüssi.
