Unbelievable! Team Vorarlberg pro Felix Stehli with the race of his life – fifth place at the UCI Gravel World Championships in Maastricht – Geismayr and Feurstein also in the top 50 after a hard core race
Sensational! Team Vorarlberg pro Felix Stehli finished fifth in the Gravel World Championships and rode the race of his life Maastricht – Feurstein and Geismayr also top!
What an impressive World Championship in the Netherlands – 181 kilometers and 1,500 meters of climbing! For Team Vorarlberg riders Daniel Geismayr and Kilian Feurstein, the day started with a small setback: due to a registration oversight by the national federation, they had to start from the very back of the field with numbers 277 and 278. But they didn’t let that hold them back. And at the front? It was Felix Stehli’s time to shine today!
Felix Stehli battles Tom Pidcock, Tim Wellens, Matej Mohoric, and others for bronze
The 24-year-old Team Vorarlberg pro Felix Stehli from Switzerland, wearing number ten in the race, rode an incredible race! Constantly visible in the front positions, Felix Stehli attacked with 70 kilometers to go, together with Bahrain-Victorious pro Matej Mohoric from Slovenia. They pursued the leading group around Florian Vermeersch (BEL / UAE Emirates) and Friets Biesterbos (NED / BEAT). Behind them were Tom Pidcock (GBR / Q36.5) and Tim Wellens (BEL / UAE Emirates). What followed was gravel sport with goosebumps. FELIX STEHLI with a chance of a World Championship medal!
Fifth place for Felix Stehli, as valuable as World Championship gold for Team Vorarlberg!
15 kilometers from the finish, on the final climb of the race, Stehli was forced to let the Slovenian Mahoric pass. Mahoric thus secured the bronze medal. The ambitious Florian Vermeersch was crowned the new World Champion ahead of the Dutchman Biesterbos. In the sprint for fourth place, Felix Stehli was defeated by Belgian Floris van Tricht. Top star Tom Pidcock finished sixth – who would have thought!
Daniel Geismayr and Kilian Feurstein in the top 50 after a comeback!
So, at the start, they had no chance of being at the top. But the two Vorarlberg natives also delivered a fantastic performance and a wild ride through the pack of 300 elite riders. In the end, Daniel Geismayr finished 45th, and youngster Kilian Feurstein finished 46th. Even more could have been achieved today.
Felix Stehli (SUI / Team Vorarlberg): “It’s truly incredible how it went today. I knew I was in top form. At the beginning, I didn’t feel so good. I was always able to place at the front and felt increasingly better, able to keep up with Mahoric. On the final climb, I was only a few points away from sprinting for a World Championship medal. But fifth place at the World Championships shines like a medal for me!”
Daniel Geismayr and Kilian Feurstein: “We knew from the start that it would be incredibly difficult from the last row of the starting grid. But it was just a blast today. The two of us rolled up the field from the back. We were even almost at the front with Felix at one point before things really got going. That took a lot of energy. We’re not unhappy about this World Championship race. Three Team Vorarlberg riders in the top 50 is something to be proud of!”
