Team Vorarlberg shines with mountain jersey defense and top placement by Colin Stüssi at the second Tour of the Alps stage!
After a brilliant start on Monday, Team Vorarlberg was also in impressive form on the second stage of the Tour of the Alps, from Telfs up to Martell, with Colin Stüssi leading the way. The 147-kilometre route with 2634 meters of elevation gain, including the Pillerhöhe (1559m) and Reschenpass (1514m) as well as a seven-kilometre mountain arrival, once again offered terrain for the climbing specialists.
Early attacks and important points for Team Vorarlberg
Already at the start in Telfs, Team Vorarlberg Profi Emanuel Zangerle in the coveted mountain jersey alongside big names such as Egan Bernal and Tom Pidcock. But the peace did not last long: Emanuel Zangerle launched the first attack of the day and was able to break away from the field solo. He was quickly joined by seven rivals, including his team colleague Dominik Röber (GER). Both Team Vorarlberg professionals, and in particular Zangerle, once again collected important points in the mountain and points sprints.
Emanuel Zangerle defends mountain jersey brilliantly
After a tough battle, Emanuel Zangerle successfully defended the mountain jersey and now leads the classification by 17 points ahead of the Italian Davide Bais (Team Polti-VisitMalta). Tobias Nolde ranks third in the points classification.
Colin Stüssi rides sensationally into the top 20 as best Continental pro
After the leading group was caught on the final climb to Martell, there was an open battle for the stage win. Giulio Pellizzari (ITA) from Red Bull BORA-hansgrohe secured this ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers). Four-time Tour de France and Giro d’Italia winner Egan Bernal (COL / INEOS Grenadiers) was also among the front runners. But just behind him, the Swiss Team Vorarlberg pro Colin Stüssi (SUI) sensationally finished 18th in the daily classification. He lost just 35 seconds to the day’s winner and, as the best UCI Continental rider, joined the ranks of the best climbers.
Colin Stüssi was visibly satisfied after the race: “It was another strong day for all of us. The aim was to defend the mountain jersey and to position myself as far forward as possible in the overall standings. The fact that it worked out so well today after my break of several weeks since the Tour of Sardinia (crash injuries) is all the more positive. There are still difficult days ahead of us, but I feel like I’m on the right track for the rest of the season.”
All Team Vorarlberg riders did an excellent team job again today and finished the race. The conclusion: Another very active and strong performance by Team Vorarlberg at this Tour of the Alps against the big names of the scene.
Outlook for the third stage: another day for the top climbers
On Wednesday, the third stage from Latsch in South Tyrol to Arco on Lake Garda covers 175 kilometers and 3600 vertical meters. A very long climb awaits immediately after the start.
