Criterium in Rankweil: A Look Back in Pictures
An enthusiastic crowd, a great atmosphere, and a spectacular show put on by nearly 50 riders—that was the setting for the classic criterium race “Rund um den Liebfrauenberg” in Rankweil. The icing on the cake of an all-around successful day was the home victory by Team Vorarlberg pro Kilian Feurstein, who, as reported, narrowly prevailed over Germany’s Jonas Schmeiser (Team Brosch) in a thrilling duel. Third place went to Loïc Bettendorff of Luxembourg, riding for Hrinkow Advarics.
In Thomas Gmeiner’s photos, we take another look back at yesterday’s events, which already had plenty to offer during the preliminary program with the Käferlecup for the youngest participants and the Hometown Heroes in the amateur divisions.
The race, presented by Rauch Fruchtsäfte and superbly organized by Thomas Kofler and his team, showcased top-level cycling. After 80 laps—or 84 kilometers—an average speed of an impressive 48.3 km/h was recorded, with speeds reaching up to 70 km/h during the sprints. Just how strong the field was is shown by the fact that German champion Felix Engelhardt finished only 24th. The 25-year-old had put in a very strong performance at this year’s Tour de France and is considered the number two in his country behind Florian Lipowitz.
