Kilian Feurstein narrowly misses out on the podium
Day 2 of the Upper Austria Tour – 188 km from Eferding to Reichersberg
On the second day of the Tour of Upper Austria, Team Vorarlberg was all set for a sprint with Kilian Feurstein. The plan worked out perfectly with an average speed of over 45 km/h until shortly before the finish. After a 7-man group with a maximum lead of three minutes was caught on the last lap as planned, the podium was within Kilian’s reach.
But on the last bend, there was a crash in a hectic sprint that turned everything upside down. One day before his 23rd birthday, Feurstein emerged unscathed from the chaos, but he had to let British stage winner Henry Hobbs from the junior team of the world-class racing team Visma | Lease a Bike, Australian Reuben Page-Brown and Italian Filippo Fortin go.
However, fourth place not only shows the young Vorarlberg native’s improving form, it also means he was the best Austrian in a very strong field.
The other Team Vorarlberg riders crossed the finish line at the same time as the winner. Emanuel Zangerle was involved in the crash at the end, but remained uninjured apart from a wound on his finger.
Tomorrow the race will cover 157 km and 1630 vertical meters from Paneum Asten to Bad Schallerbach. K19 and ORF Sport+ will be broadcasting live from 15:30.
