Colombian victory in Nenzing by Santiago Umba – Team Vorarlberg pro Emanuel Zangerle shines with fifth place after a strong team performance

Nenzing, May 01, 2026 – A magnificent cycling festival took place in Nenzing today, May 1! The 15th GP Vorarlberg, Austria’s biggest one-day race with the prestigious UCI 1.2 status and the third competition of the Austrian Cycling League, exceeded all expectations. With a thrilling race, a record starting field for the traditional Käferle Cup and a sensational spectator response, the region around Nenzing was transformed into an epicenter of cycling. The great atmosphere once again underlined the importance of this spring classic for the local and international cycling scene.

Course of the race: Active organization by Team Vorarlberg and high speed through the Walgau region

The starting signal was given at 11:30 a.m. for an impressive 150-strong field consisting of 23 teams and athletes from 20 nations. Over 163 selective stage kilometers and 2400 meters of altitude, a race unfolded that promised a high level from the start. Team Vorarlberg had to make do without Giacomo Ballabio at short notice due to illness, but the experienced local hero  Dominik Amann moved seamlessly into the seven-man squad. The competition was immensely strong, peppered with some former World Tour riders. Team Vorarlberg, as the home team, took on the responsibility and forced the pace at the front of the peloton from the middle of the race.

In the last big lap on the Rönserberg, the leading group was almost caught when Team Visma Lease a Bike launched a sharp attack. However, Team Vorarlberg immediately countered with the next increase in speed. In the thrilling finale, Colin Stüssi,  Emanuel ZangerlePhilipp Hofbauer and Dominik Röber and four Vorarlberg professionals. The peloton split into several groups during this decisive phase. The “yellow bumblebees” from Visma Lease a Bike relentlessly pushed the pace, which was reflected in the hourly average of 42.5 km/h at the end of this tough race.

World-class exchange of blows – Zangerle with a furioso finale

The final lap was completed with 15 pros. On the climb to the Alpencamping Nenzing, the Colombian  Santiago Umba from Team Solution Tech Nippo Rali made the decisive attack. He was able to cross the finish line solo in a heart-stopping final and was celebrated frenetically by the enthusiastic crowd. Second place went to his Swiss team colleague  Alexandre Balmer, followed by the Polish Goszczurny Patrick (Team Visma Lease a Bike) in third place.

Zangerle and Stüssi fight for the podium

For the Vorarlberg team Emanuel Zangerle produced a truly furious finale: he won the sprint from the chasing pack with aplomb and secured a strong fifth place. “We actively organized the home race. The competition was really strong today and we can be more than satisfied with fifth place, even though the podium was within reach. But the boys did a great job and delivered again!”, summarized  Emanuel Zangerle after the race. Also  Colin Stüssi put in a strong performance and finished in 14th place, followed by Philipp Hofbauer in 19th place and Dominik Röber in 20th place.

Austrian Cycling League: Team Vorarlberg with triple lead and dominance

The success at the GP Vorarlberg underlines the current supremacy of Team Vorarlberg in the Austrian Cycling League. Team Vorarlberg Profi continues to lead the overall individual standings after the third competition  Tobias Nolde. With Emanuel Zangerle and Philipp Hofbauer, there are now even three (!!) Vorarlberg professionals in the leading positions, underlining the current dominance in Austria. Team Vorarlberg is also clearly in the lead in the team ranking with an impressive 90 points, ahead of Hrinkow Advarics with 63 points.

Record field and huge enthusiasm at the Käferle Cup

Before the pros took to the stage, Nenzing belonged to the youngest cyclists: over 300 (!) children aged between 2 and 14 rocked the market town at the Käferle Cup, ensuring beaming faces and an exuberant atmosphere. After the races, the young talents were supervised throughout the day on a bike course. The Bürgermusik Nenzing provided the perfect gastronomic setting for the May festival. Team Vorarlberg would like to thank all participants, the market town of Nenzing, the sponsors, the many dedicated helpers, the authorities, the press and the media for their coverage and all service providers who were involved in this fantastic event. Every single one of them was a guarantor and a piece of the mosaic for this unforgettable cycling festival for young and old!
