Fingers crossed for Team Vorarlberg captain Lukas Meiler after crashing at the 86th Giro della Romagna UCI 1.1

Bad luck for Lukas Meiler after a strong Team Vorarlberg performance at the 86th Giro della Romagna UCI 1.1

Finally another top-class race in Italy. After 2011, the Giro della Romagna will be held again this Sunday. The 193-kilometer race from Lugo to Castrocara Terme e Terra del Sole served as a fine tuning for some teams for the upcoming Giro de Italia.

On the approach to the difficult final laps, Lukas Rüegg, most recently involved in the Track World Cup, is able to successfully pull away from the field with seven competitors. Rüegg subsequently picks up points on the climbs, but the group is put behind by UAE Team Emirates’ pace work 40 kilometers before the finish.

UAE Team Emirates wins – Lukas Meiler finishes on foot instead of top ten

In the final elimination race, the Portuguese U23 runner-up from last year, Antonio Morgado (UAE Team Emirates), emerged victorious from a small group. Second Joan Bou (SPA / Euskatel-Euskadi), third Mattia Bais (ITA / Polti-Kometa). Lukas Meiler was able to attack again in the final. In the sprint for sixth place, then the dilemma. 200 meters before the finish, Meiler and his pursuers have to dodge a camera motorcycle.

The German captain crashes at high speed and drags himself across the finish line on foot. He complained of pain in the shoulder area. So unfortunately the next visit was to the hospital for an X-ray. The team is hoping for the best for the man from Oberammergau.
