Giro d’Abruzzo: No changes ahead of the final stage
Giro d’Abruzzo: Day 3 from Oricola to San Benedetto dei Marsi (159 kilometers)
Team Vorarlberg didn’t have an easy time of it today on the third day of the Giro d’Abruzzo. In a stage tailored for sprinters, the local team’s strategy was centered on their fastest rider, Kilian Feurstein. Captain Colin Stüssi, in particular, did a great job for the young rider from Dornbirn, who—in a very strong field—never managed to get into a truly promising position toward the end and had to settle for 26th place.
The story of the third stage is quickly told. Of a six-man breakaway group, three riders remained at first, before Filippo D’Aiuto tried his luck solo in the final kilometers. In an extremely fast finish, he held on to a two-second lead to the finish line. Behind him, 84 riders crossed the finish line more or less simultaneously—including Kilian Feurstein and Colin Stüssi (29th), Giacomo Ballabio (38th), Ignazio Cireddu (58th), and Dominik Röber (77th). All five were six seconds behind.
At the top, it was an Italian showcase, with eight riders in the top 10. Among them, alongside the stage winner, was Alessandro Fancellu, who successfully defended the yellow jersey as the overall leader by finishing ninth.
Speaking of the overall standings: Colin Stüssi and Giacomo Ballabio held onto their positions and, trailing by 35 and 40 seconds, respectively, still have a good chance of finishing in the top 10.
