Team Vorarlberg in the flow! Emanuel Zangerle takes the mountain jersey – Daniel Geismayr and Alexander Konychev men of the day – Jannis Peter tied with Del Toro!
100% delivered! Team Vorarlberg pro Emanuel Zangerle takes the mountain jersey on the second Tour of Austria stage – Geismayr and Konychev make for a lot of TV time – Jannis Peter with Del Toro pari
The second day of the Tour of Austria on Thursday from Bischofshofen over 142 kilometers with a tough finale up to St. Johann Alpendorf. Yesterday already a strong performance on stage one with three riders in the leading group, and TODAY AGAIN you can see yellow and black at the front.
Emanuel Zangerle takes the Tour of Austria mountain jersey
The tactics of the Team Vorarlberg pros worked perfectly for the mountain classification jersey today. Thanks to a great team effort, 24-year-old Emanuel Zangerle won the first mountain classification and took the lead in the overall classification. Equal on points with the Kazakh Nicolas Vinokurov from the World Tour Team Astana-XDS, but with more direct victories in the classifications!
Daniel Geismayr and Alexander Konychev with horrendous pace in the leading group
Yesterday like today! Team Vorarlberg is the dominant team in the race with two riders in the six-man leading group of the day! Daniel Geismayr from Vorarlberg and “Sunnyboy” Alexander Konychev are pushing the pace, giving the race plenty of momentum with an average speed of over 46 km/h. The teams UAE-Emirates and Team EF Education-Easy Post don’t give the breakaway more than three minutes. BUT AGAIN LOTS OF TV time on ORF, Servus-TV and EUROSPORT for Team Vorarlberg!
Vorarlberg pros just before the finish – Jannis Peter in battle with stage winner Del Toro
In the final, the familiar game of cat and mouse. Geismayr and Konychev are only caught by the peloton 4000 meters before the finish. In the super-tough mountain sprint to Alpendorf, the Giro overall runner-up from Mexico Isaac Del Toro (UAE-Emirates) wins ahead of Andrew August (USA / INEOS-Grenadiers). Jannis Peter finished in 22nd place at the same time as Del Toro and is now 19th overall, 46 seconds behind overall leader Felix Großschartner (AUT / UAE-Emirates). Colin Stüssi did not feel quite fit all day and is currently 26th.
In short: a really good day – everything done right!
O-Ton Thomas Kofler – Team Manager: “Just like yesterday, an incredible performance from the riders today. The atmosphere is really great. Everyone is having fun working hard for success. The fact that it worked out for “Emu” Zangerle today with the mountain jersey is a first victory in the Tour for us. The level is so incredibly high this year, so all the more chapeau for what the guys delivered today!”
Stage three – it’s off to the mountains!
Friday sees the first mountain finish on the Gaisberg on Salzburg soil. The section starts in Salzburg Hellbrun in the 143 kilometer stage with 2755 meters of altitude. There will be three approaches to the Gaisberg before the final lap goes all the way up. An important day for the first big selection for the overall standings. But also with a focus on the mountain classification for Zangerle.
