Team Vorarlberg pro Tobias Nolde opens Fleche du Sud Tour in Luxembourg in ninth place – Kilian Feurstein eleventh after rain battle
Team Vorarlberg opens the Flèche du Sud (UCI 2.1) Ninth and eleventh place by Tobias Nolde and Kilian Feurstein
Team Vorarlberg opened the 75th edition of the Flèche du Sud (UCI 2.1) in Luxembourg today with two riders at the front. After a demanding “monster program”, which saw the team shine just last week at the successful Tour of Hellas with Colin Stüssi’sthird place overall, the direct transfer to the Grand Duchy took place. Team Vorarlberg has a special relationship with this traditional tour in the past, having won it in 2015 with Victor de la Parte and in 2016 with Sergio Sousa has already won twice.
Tough conditions at the start in Stadtbredimus – Nolde on nine – Feurstein on eleven
The first 94-kilometer stage with start and finish in Stadtbredimus proved to be a tough affair. Constant rain and slippery roads characterized the race and led to numerous crashes in the field. Leader Colin Stüssi was also involved, but was able to get back on his bike immediately and continue the race. In the hectic finale, Kilian Feurstein and Tobias Nolde was right at the front until 400 meters before the finish. Then the set-up wasn’t quite right, which prevented a top three finish. Nevertheless, Tobias Nolde finished a strong ninth, team colleague Kilian Feurstein eleventh. The stage win and the first leader’s jersey went to British World Tour rider Matthew Brennan from Team Visma-Lease a Bike.
“A start under these conditions and especially after the long journeys is currently challenging for the entire team, including the coaches. However, morale is high and the two placings today in this strong field show the current level of the team. We are looking ahead and will attack again on tomorrow’s 151-kilometer stage and try to place something countable by Sunday,” says sports director Paul Renger.
