Day 5: Esch-sur-Alzette – Esch-sur-Alzette (166.5 km)
“Purpose fulfilled, valuable race kilometers collected for the difficult tasks ahead and happy with the first UCI points of the year for Dominik Röber,” was the brief conclusion of race director Paul Renger after today’s final stage of the 75th Flèche du Sud. After Kilian Feurstein and Tobias Nolde had impressed with good sprint results at the start of the tour, luck was not on Team Vorarlberg’s side on the pre-decisive mountain stage on the third day: Captain Colin Stüssi lost all chances of a possible top place due to a material defect.
The story of today’s final stage is quickly told: On the fast urban course with start and finish in Esch-sur-Alzette, the World Tour team from Visma | Lease a Bike had everything under control despite numerous attacks and small breakaway groups and led Belgian Matisse van Kerckhove to overall victory. And that’s not all: the Dutch team also took the day’s victory: Matthew Brennan managed to in the bunch sprint, after day 1 and 2 had already fallen prey to the fast Brit.
The best Team Vorarlberg rider today was Kilian Feurstein, who arrived in 22nd place and, like Dominik Röber, Ignazio Cireddu and Tobias Nolde, stayed on time with Brennan.
Particularly pleasing: Dominik Röber defended his 17th place overall and secured his first UCI points this year.
For Team Vorarlberg, the Tour of Luxembourg was the conclusion of an intensive block of 20 race days in just 28 days. Now comes a short recovery phase. The next event is the international criterium in Schönberg in Bavaria on May 24th. The race will be organized by long-time team partners Dominik Dietrich (Hairstyling Dietrich) and Toni Jung (Elsaß Bäcker).
