Great cycling action at the 14th GP Vorarlberg UCI 1.2 – Slovenian Jaka Marolt wins ahead of Team Vorarlberg pro Colin Stüssi
It was the expected fierce battle for victory at the 14th GP Vorarlberg, the only one-day race in Austria with World Cup status. The large peloton with 24 teams and pros from over 20 nations set off on the 163 kilometers in the market town of Nenzing at 11 a.m. in glorious weather. The many fans along the route were treated to a classic-like and challenging circuit with 2400 meters of elevation gain.
Exciting race and unique cycling enthusiasm
The weather gods meant well. The script could not have been written any better. Bright sunshine, the most exciting race right up to the last meter, huge enthusiasm on the course and an international podium.
A horrendous pace in the first lap at 46 km/ then a leading group was able to break away. Among them was the eventual winner Jaka Marolt from Slovenia (Team Factor Racing). They dominated the race for a long time until the established teams, above all the home team Vorarlberg, took control.
Colin Stüssi with a great final show – eight seconds short of a coup!
More than two minutes behind, the pursuers set off on the three difficult final laps. Team Vorarlberg puts its captain Colin Stüssi in position. The Swiss rider, who is currently in excellent form, attacks and chases the breakaway single-handedly. Stüssi literally storms past all his rivals. Only the Slovenian Jaka Marolt fought back to the finish line. In the end, the Team Vorarlberg pro was beaten by eight seconds in front of an enthusiastic crowd and finished an outstanding second in Austria’s biggest one-day race.
Colin Stüssi on second place: “Normally you’re not always happy with second place. But today I am, because we did almost everything right today. Jaka Marolt was incredibly strong and fought back successfully. I rode solo and gained two minutes. It’s a shame that it wasn’t enough, but my team and I are delighted with our good form. We’ll take second place today as motivation. You could see today that things are going well in the team!”
Jannis Peter in the top ten – Alexander Konychev remains leader of the Cycling League Austria
Third today is Marcin Budzinski from Poland (ATT Investments). The German Jannis Peter is the second best Team Vorarlberg rider in tenth place. Emanuel Zangerle finishes 16th after a crash on the final descent. Alexander Konychev, 24th today, retains the lead in the Cycling League Austria.
Team Vorarlberg also wins today’s team classification of the league and now also leads the team ranking! A successful home race all round!
