Tour of Hellas, Day 3: Volos-Lamia, 207 kilometers
“On the third and fourth day, we have to be at our best in the mountains. That’s when the Tour is decided,” announced race director Paul Renger before the Tour of Greece. This plan was perfectly implemented by Team Vorarlberg in today’s queen stage against strong competition.
Even more so in difficult external conditions: The rain was so heavy that at the beginning of the day the peloton decided on its own initiative to complete a narrow and slippery descent at a moderate pace without attacking.
It was all the more intense after that. The lead became more and more manageable, especially as the World Tour-tested team from Unibet Rose Rockets stepped up the pace in the final. again increased.
In the middle of it all, three men from Team Vorarlberg: Philipp Hofbauer even took part in an attack at one point. In the end, however, he had to let go, as did Dominik Röber, who did very valuable work for a long time, particularly as a helper to captain Colin Stüssi.
Stüssi emphasized on the longest stage with He showed his early form on the 4266-metre climb and crossed the finish line in a leading group of 18 riders at the same time as the day’s winner Jelle Johannink. The Dutchman from the Unibet Rose Rockets team also took the lead in the overall standings, in which Colin Stüssi made up 17 places. The downside from Vorarlberg’s point of view: Dominik Amann and Laurin Nenning missed the time limit and, like so many others, had to finish the tour early.
Two more stages await the riders until Sunday. A preliminary decision is expected on Saturday, when another 2790 meters of altitude have to be mastered.
